Grammarly and why I use it
One of the tools I adopted early on as a writer and author was Grammarly.
You’d think as a professional proofreader I wouldn’t need a tool like Grammarly, but the truth is when you are working with hundreds and thousands of words, you are going to make mistakes. Even professional editors miss the mark sometimes. We have all found errors in books that the big names in publishing have published and missed, and that’s after having several eyes and programs on them.
Most people think Grammarly is a basic spell check and grammar tool, but it does so much more.
Grammarly is a web and mobile application that checks for hundreds of errors in written text. It also provides suggestions for improvement to your writing style, so that your writing becomes unique to you.
Grammarly can detect errors such as grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, contextual spelling, and writing style.
There is a free version of Grammarly, but you can upgrade to a premium plan which supplies language enhancement suggestions to increase your writing knowledge and skills. It also includes a plagiarism checker software tool.

It takes less than a minute to get started, just download the software extension, and install it into your web browser.
I also work in content marketing, so I use it for work. It’s a great tool for blogs, articles, and any other important document.
Grammarly helps you write mistake free whether you’re responding to a business email, crafting a status update, or writing a paper. Grammarly claims to be the world’s best grammar checker, with over 3 million users worldwide. What I know is it makes everything you type easy to understand and error-free. And you can set it to British English or American English which is handy.
No matter how good you think your English is, Grammarly can always improve it. It can be accessed from anywhere and has a built-in writing enhancement tool that gives you the power to write with confidence. The app is built on powerful algorithms and advanced technology that corrects mistakes instantly as you type.
Grammarly might be for you if you are concerned about your
- Grammar

- Writing style
Grammarly helps you communicate more effectively by improving your writing in all of your word processing programs. Grammarly runs on Microsoft Office, Google Docs, Gmail, and other platforms.
I guess you could say Grammarly works alongside you as your in-house editor by flagging grammar mistakes and typos. As I mentioned above, it can also detect plagiarism as well as suggest alternatives to words and phrases to ensure that you convey your message precisely. With its easy-to-use editor, it scans all of your work in real time—finding errors in five languages and catching everything from punctuation to context.
There are a few ways you can use Grammarly.
- Copy and paste from your piece of writing directly into the program.
- Upload the completed writing piece from MS word.
- Write directly into Grammarly.
- Window users can install a Grammarly plugin on MS word.
There’s a free plan, a premium plan for individuals, and a business plan for teams, organisations, and enterprises.
I have a premium subscription for my MacBook, and this is how I use it –
- Write in Scrivener (if it’s a book I’m writing) otherwise I copy and paste from MS Word.
- I paste my draft directly into Grammarly.
- I edit in Grammarly based on the suggestions given.
- Publish.
I love that Grammarly offers constructive feedback, so you can learn from your mistakes as you go.
